Susan Hill was born in Scarborough and educated at grammar schools there and in Coventry and took her English degree at King’s College, London. Her best known books, apart from The Woman in Black, are the novels I’m the King of the Castle, Strange Meeting and In the Springtime of the Year. Her books have won the Whitbread fiction Award, the Somerset Maugham Award and the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and been shortlisted for The Booker Prize. She has also written non- fiction and children’s books and been a regular reviewer of books for numerous national newspapers and journals and broadcast regularly. Her most recent books are the eight novels in the Simon Serrailler  crime series, and new ghost novels including The Small Hand, Dolly, Printers Devil Court and The Travelling Bag. She is married to the Shakespeare scholar Sir Stanley Wells, and has two adult daughters and one granddaughter. Of her fiction, Susan Hill writes: “I was born on the North East coast of Yorkshire, in the beautiful town of Scarborough, in a snow-bound February during the Second World War. There were a good many old ladies living there in those days but there never seemed to be any children near to us, so that I spent a lot of my time on my own. But quite contentedly so. I had imaginary friends and I made up stories about them. As soon as I could, I wrote them down. So there was never a time in my life when I was not a writer. And so it has gone on. At school, between work for O and A levels, I wrote two novels, which were published when I was at university reading English. They were very bad novels, my apprentice work, and they are out of print – but they were the best I could do at the time. Robin read Philosophy and English at St. Andrews University and trained as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Much of his early career was involved with Alan Ayckbourn and the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. Joining the company in 1976 as an actor, he was appointed Associate Director in 1979 and was Artistic Director from 1986 to 1988. Robin has appeared in the original production of more Ayckbourn plays than any other actor, from Ten Times Table in 1977 to Henceforward… in 1987, and including the monster 16-play two-hander Intimate Exchanges. He came to London with Season’s Greetings and Suburban Strains (Round House Theatre), Intimate Exchanges (Ambassadors Theatre) and Henceforward…(Vaudeville Theatre). While Artistic Director at Scarborough, he commissioned and directed Stephen Mallatratt’s phenomenally successful adaptation of The Woman in Black which has been running in the West End for almost 30 years, and has completed 12 national tours. Neil is a former member of the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and has worked at the Royal National Theatre in London, the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and had spells in London’s West End as well. However, Neil lives on an old croft in the Outer Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland and is much happier leading a more nomadic touring life when away from home. He has worked in genres as diverse as drama, dance, Shakespeare, farce, children’s theatre, pantomime, musicals, opera and ballet. This has taken him not just around the United Kingdom but also to France, Germany, Ireland and Dubai. As well as The Woman in Black, career highlights have been the children’s shows The Gingerbread Man, The Ideal Gnome Expedition and The Tiger who came to Tea – all directed by David Wood. Neil is best known for his work on The Woman in Black, working with director Robin Herford on numerous United Kingdom tours, and also in Hong Kong, Singapore, and most recently Luxembourg.

Pemberley Productions is a company founded and run by Andrew D. Hamingson and Tim Smith. They are dedicated to bringing European drama to North America and North American drama to Europe. This season, as well as co-producing the first US tour of The Woman in Black, Pemberley is producing US tours of PW Productions’ tour of the National Theatre of Great Britain’s production of An Inspector Calls directed by Stephen Daldry and the first US tour of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, adapted and directed by Simon Reade. Previous projects include a US national tour of the Royal Shakespeare Company / Filter Theatre production of Twelfth Night, a European tour of The Public Theater’s Apple Family Plays and an Irish Tour of the American Players Theatre’s production of James DeVita’s In Acting Shakespeare. Pemberley also co-produced the US tour of Ensemble Basiani from the Republic of Georgia in 2016 and general managed the US tour of Druid Theatre’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane. This past season Pemberley Productions produced the second US national tour of Sancho by and with Paterson Joseph, and general managed the national tour of Theatre De La Ville’s State of Siege and the NY premiere of Some Old Black Man at 59E59.
